Ted Talks

I stumbled in to these Ted Talks whilst looking for figures that relate to sustainable fashion and how the fashion industry is endangering the planet.
The talks were insight full about our personal wasted and the wastage caused by the industry. Each speaker had a different response to the problem but all revolved around the same basic idea.

"Change needs to start with us."

Fredrik Wikholm created a bag in which one item of clothing was placed in, to be posted off and then recycled. The idea is imaginative and thoughtful. To use that much plastic for one item of clothing may defeat the object of  the task. Unless the plastics will be recycled also.
The best thing about this idea it will help the consumer think about what they wear a lot and intend on keeping and what was a sporadic purchase.

I then moved on to Christina Dean. Dentist moved to fashion and lifestyle journalist. Who lived out in china recording the pollution and wastage caused by textiles. Through this she set it as her mission to become green with fashion for a year of her life. Sourcing all of her clothes from a second hand warehouse. The information gained by this experiment was insightful. Realisation that the main destruction of clothing is caused by the consumer its self and that figure is 58% of our clothes . Showing that if  we took more care we wouldn't have to replace items so quickly or bulk buy.

Eva Kruse was a little different to her views on fashion she believed in clothes and the purchasing of clothes.  Eva just reminded people of the effects of organic fabrics and how they can use more of our natural resources in comparison to man made fabrics which can also be recycled.
" Noone buys fashion to save the world...but we have a conscious choice on how we use it."

Through watching these speakers I have collected data which is relative to my cause. I will be doing my own market research in to fashion within the UK and how much of it is thrown away or wasted.
So that I have a primary resource to my work.

Amour Vert (love green)

This link takes you to view what amour vert is about and how they want to make an impact on the world. Using different techniques that help to keep the planet greener.
This is the message that I want to portray in my work and make fashion sustainable rather than short lived and thrown away.

Gwyn M Lewis

Gwyn Lewis used the same sort of sheep that the yarn came from to create her holders.
This was done to promote the product. This was to attract attention from people interested in crafts.

I have used this as research to my work because I like the effect it has on the viewer. As well as responding to the product people will also respond to the packaging and remember where the wool has come from.
This has an effect on my work because I like the simplicity of the message and how easy the packaging has been made.

My first idea - Fashion and short term gratification

Design : a system for living

The brief in my eyes is complex and hard to figure out. Without having the workshop with Tim Milne to unpick the logics of the brief.
Tom Milne got us to think about the increase of technology and when an environment is nurtured it will move forward and progress.

Through the increase in technology and complexity we are losing control of dialog and forget that there is a bigger more real word available to us rather than the digital world we are fixated on.

The exercise to get us thinking about who, what where and why about the brief broadened our thinking patterns and took us in to different areas. Which are affected by human culture and that need repair.
